Midweek fun in Bath and London.

When we all finally got back from Fall break it was a weird feeling. We were a bit sad due to it being over and the realization of having to go back to class the next day, but it also felt great to be back in Bath. It was like I made it back home after a long time away. During this past week I had things planned for almost every day besides Monday. On last Tuesday, Matt, Zach, Andrew, and I spent the afternoon at the Organery. The Organery is an assisted living home in Bath where we all have been required to spend an afternoon as part of our service credit required for this trip. Not only was it just any Tuesday, it was also Guy Fawkes day. "Rememeber, Remember, the fifth of November" has also been a familiar saying to me, but it was a cool experience it in England to finally learn for myself what it means to the English people. First, just to make sure everyone knows who Guy Fakwes is I'll give you a brief summary. He attempted to blow up parliament a few hundred years ago and never carried through with it. When talking to the English people they themselves don't really understand why that story developed into such a big holiday over the last hundred years or so, but they celebrate that day nonetheless. The English people build a Guy Fawkes that sort of looks like a scarecrow (picture below) every year and the tradition is that everyone that night will have bonfires at their house or out in town at which they burn the Guy. It probably sounds sort of foolish to you as it did to me at first, but it's their holiday. Overall, we had fun building the Guy and enjoyed our time that we spent with the elderly people there. Wednesday night, Alex and I set off for London to see Chelsea vs. Schalke 04 (a German team) play in a champions league match at Chelsea. The atmosphere was electric due to the significance behind the match and we were both excited to be there to experience it. We unfortunately weren't sitting together but we still had fun and really enjoyed the night. Chelsea would end up winning 3-0 but the most impressive thing about the whole night was the German fans who travelled to London just to see their team play. It would be less impressive if it was a weekend trip, but it was a Wednesday night and there was about 6,000 of them in total there to support their team. Even when they were down 3-0 they continued to sing and support. I'm glad I got to experience yet another match and the different side of football it presented. I will put up another blog soon. Until next time.
